It’s weeks like this one, with the weathermuse promising bright sunny skies and warmer winds, that make me miss my old freelance lifestyle. Is it just me, or does it feel like the most beautiful weather always falls on a workday? Alas, temperatures are reaching 74 today and 77 on Friday. If you’re one of the lucky ones with the day off, or you’ve reached the last straw at your workplace and you’re ready to deck Lumberg in the face and walk out, now’s the time to avoid the traffic and check out one of my favorite spots.
You may never see a more beautiful ocean view in your life than the one at Torrey Pines Glider Port. I know I haven’t. It’s a city-owned glider airport frequented by paragliders, hang gliders, those crazy remote controlled German fighter planes, and occasionally small glider planes that carry an actual crazy person.
Located on the cliffs just above Blacks Beach, you can take in some really amazing views of La Jolla and even some of downtown on a clear day. You may want to bring a jacket, since the ocean breeze here is really strong, which probably explains the glider port. The grass here is plush and usually very green. Have a seat and stay a while. Did you pack a lunch? I forgot last time. Never again! The hangliders and paragliders are fun to watch, and one of these days I’ll muster up the courage to try it. For now, I just wanna get really good at this paper airplane thing before stepping up to the big leagues.
To get there, take the 5 to Genesee and head west. Turn south onto North Torrey Pines Road and turn right onto Torrey Pines Scenic Dr. Drive past the first parking lot until you get to the dirt lot. 11480 N Torrey Pines Rd, San Diego, CA
